Adoptions

Chloe

Chloe and Genesis met last year, when Genesis worked in Territorio de Zaguates for the summer.

She was working on a volunteer project with a group of young veterinary students. And they loved all the dogs, but Chloe had a special thing to her. She always wanted to be around them, even when they were taking classes and not giving her much attention, she just wanted to be near where the kids were.

“I really liked that about her, but I didn't know that I would adopt her until it just happened. It was a tough decision because I was not there for very long, but it didn’t feel rushed at all.

So I talked to Lya about the process of adoption about two days after I arrived in Costa Rica and realized that Chloe met every requirement in my head, she just turned out to be the one, and I already made a connection with her.

So I talked to my sister and after that we decided, we were on board with this plan, we both invested into the plane ticket. And so Chloe had an airplane ticket for the first time, and that's where I really was, like, wow. From Nada to Prada!” Genesis laughed.

Chloe’s journey was quite the breeze, as she mostly slept for her flights. “I think she might have just been questioning, like, why is it so quiet? Because at the sanctuary, there's always barking. There's always noise. And back here in California, she adjusted really well. She adjusted well to my dogs, with my cats. She had to do a little bit of an adjustment. But we got her in the routine really quick”.

After she finally adjusted to the routine that she got, like, she started showing her real personality. She’s a really active dog, and takes three mile walks with her family at least once a day. When she’s not running around and digging holes in the garden, she sleeps with her doggy sisters.

She also had to adjust to the weather, because Genesis and her family live in the high desert in California, so it gets very hot in the mornings and very cold in the nights, and she had to get used to that. What a way to go for a tropical girl!

Chloe gets along with everyone in her family but particularly loves Genesis' sister and her  cat sister Matilda. “When I think about her relationship with us, I just know she trusts us to take care of her. I think she really loves this environment, where she has other dog and cat siblings. I can tell that she feels safe here, which is relieving.

Chloe’s adoption felt like the biggest mission for adoption ever, because before her I've only just adopted from California. And I think my life has changed with her, because I can see that she feels she trusts us to make her feel safe, even if she’s far away from everything she once knew.

And I think that's how my perspective has changed, that there are other animals in other parts of the world that sadly don't feel the love that our pets experience. Something that I wanted to do for her was to make her feel loved and safe and just like this is her solace, and I wish I could do that for every dog out there”.
